Elder Jacob Anderson says, "Thank you, Grandma, for always sending me dearelder.com letters. It's always nice to be able to have something to open and read!!! Thank you Clayton, Rachel, and the little ones for the letters!! They were very exciting to read!

I received some mails this week which is very exciting!! thank you grandma for always sending me a dearelder it is always nice to be able to have something to open and read!!! |Thank you Clatin, Rachel and the littles ones for the letters!! THey were very exciting to read! i really enjoyed the pictures!!  I am always asking myself how can I learn to be a better missionary today, tomorrow and forever. I almost always end up thinking about the members. When I was in the MTC I dont remember which one but a General Authority spoke to us. He talked about the numbers of members we have, around 16 million, and how many missionary's we have, around 70,000. We have about 140,000 converts every year, people baptized after the age of 8. So on average world wide a missionary averages 2 baptisms. I don't remember exactly but
1/3 or 1/4 of all those baptisms had to do with a member before they ever met missionary's.
Salvation is not easy and it is only possible through baptism in the only true church that has the power and authority of God. Thankfully this power and authority has been restored to the today. It has been made possible to feel more joy and happiness in this life and the next because the the Only true and everlasting Gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored. Salvation has been made possible because of this. Do you have friends, family who have no made the sacred convent of baptism? Unless you live in box.. or Utah (which is almost a box)...
kidding... No matter where you life or what you do with your time you know people who have not made this convent or maybe who are not renewing it every Sunday.
I want to challenge you to listent and obey the words of the prophets and help hasten the work of Jesus Christ. The scriptures promsie over and over and over again that if we have faith , a deasire and are dilligent we will receive answers to our prays. Start praying tonight to find people in your life to share the gospel with. To be exact pray to find 12 people that you can you PERSONALLY introduce to the missionarys, or atleast try. That is one person every month. You will literally be apart of the most important work in the world. This is possible and this will make a world of difference. We 16,000,000 members and only 70,000 missionarys. Missionarys are like a Queen on a chess board. You cant win when you only use you queen! You are most effective when you use your pawns wisely and use all of your peices together. This is the same for the missionary work. Have missionarys in your house as often as possible, with someone who is inactive or not a member. They do now only need to come over for dinnner or lunch.
And when missionarys in your hosue use them. Missionarys have been called and set apart by the power of God. They can help you. Ask they for help with how to start a conversation about the gospel with a friend, how you can invaite a friend over with out being push. Ask them to role play with you. Give the missionarys someone to teach when they come to your house.

We have the plan of happiness. We have the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. We have the power of God on earth today. Be faithful in all things, repent of your sins, renew your baptismal covienent every single week of your life, be worthy of the Holy Ghost and endure to the end. This is the gospel of Jesus Christ. LIve it, love it and SHARE IT!!

Elder Joseph Anderson says, "¡Estoy trabajando a ful!"

¡Estoy trabajando a ful!
This week my companion and I have really been working our tales off! We contact a ton of people every day and usually just makes times to come back and visit them. The work is definately not easy out here. Not many people let us share our message with them but we invite them still the same!

This week we found a man named Jose. He is about 55 years old and he let us sit down and share our message with him. Then when we came back to his house for the return appoinment he was there and ready to have another lesson, and had read in the Book of Mormon( Which is all very uncommon) so we taught him again and he was excited to read more in the Book of Mormon and this time say a prayer after to ask God if it is a true Book. We also invited him to church and made plans to help him come to church with us on Sunday. Anybody who has served a mission porbably knows that Sundays are usually the most stressfull day of the week because it is the day to see just ho committed your investigators are. And out here we wake up at 6:00 on sunday ( instead of our usual 7.00) to go out early and help investigators come to church. Also if your lucky you get to teach 2nd and third hour of church like me and my companion do haha. But anyway we went to Jose´s house and he as all ready to go!!!! Wow... it was awesome. During sacrament meeting I helped Jose sing te hymns and by last last one he had figured it out and was actually singing a little bit. For the closing prayer something kinda funny happened. The sister saying the closing prayer didnt make sure the micraphone was up to her mouth so it was really hard to hear her. Well in the middle of te prayer Jose sound with a very strong voice ¨¡No le Escucho! !Mas Fuerte¡¨ which just means I cant here you, speak up, So yeah that pretty much made my day.

Well other than Jose we dont have any other investigators who made it to church on Sunday so we will have to visit them this week and help tem get there next week. That is pretty much all that happened this week. My companion and I are really enjoying our time together and are serving the Lord with all our heart, might, mind and strength.
I love you all and am grateful for all your prayers.

Elder Joseph Anderson's Latest Letter from Argentina

So this week has been kind of interesting. First of all I am writing today because yesterday was a hollady here and nobody goes to school or works so the President just told us it would be better to just have Pday today.

Anyway last week on wednesday my companion had surgery on his big toe because he had an ingrown tonail. It was super nasty and he couldnt walk so we stayed in the PenciĆ³n (apartment) for all of thursday friday and saturday. It was kina a long week but we got some good studying in. We pretty much just read all day long and pracitced teaching lessons. But on Sunday he was ready to go and we were able to go to church and work on Sunday night.

As of right now we really only have one pregressing investigator and his name in fillyberto. He is really awesome and we are really excited that we found and are teaching him. Today for our district meeting President Heyman and the assistents came to do a practice and help us be better teachers. The practice is they have a bag of all of the seccions from chapter three in preach my gospel (the lessons) and each companionship picks one randomly and then gets two minutes to prepare to teach it to a mock investigator in ten minutes. Then President Heyman tells you what you did well and what you did crappy on. Yeah no pressure. So ofcourse me and my companion got to go first. We did pretty well but i really enjoyed the advice we and all the other misionaries got. First I am going to praise my dad a little bit because he gave me some advice that President Heyman repeated to me pretty much word for word. My first really hard class that I took in highschool was my junior year history college level class. we had to read a lot of books and take a lot of notes and study a lot. Well I asked my dad how I should read and take notes and how I should study (especially if I dont have much time) and he told me that almost always the first declaration or sentence in every section is the most important. Well president Heyman said that exact thing about Preach my gospel. He said the most important thing in every section is the forst sentence unter the topic and if we can only read one thing about the topic thats what it should be. So thank you dad. I also learned a lot more on how to be a better teacher and how to teach the true, simple, and pure doctine of the gospel. I dont have much more time to write but I want to let you all know that I am corking very hard out here and I am trying to be the best teacher, missionary, and servent of god that I can be. I am so grateful for the gospel and all the people in my life that are examples to me and help me very much.

Elder Jacob Anderson's letter from Realengo, Rio de Janerio, Brazil

So this is my third transfer in Realengo (see the Wikipedia link on Realengo at the bottom). Its my first and only area so far and its pretty freaking awesome, in short i love it. My first companion, trainer, was Elder Riberio he was.. is very cool. We had 2 transfers together or 3 months.. For the most part easy going, we had a great time together. I think we both learned a lot. Our companionship was really kind funny because Elder Riberio is a pretty shy guy. Didn't really like to talk or know what to talk about.
This probably helped me speak the language more because i cant stand being with people have nothing to say. This both of talk a lot because i would try to talk and people who have no idea what i was saying and then Elder RIberio would have to try translate my Portuguese into proper Portuguese. Elder Riberio was the same for teaching. He never really knew what to teach so I started out my mission, literally from day being able to just about always lead the lesson. Oh have things have changed. Elder Leal has a lot more time on his mission. He is not shy and is always talking. I went from doing all the talking to not being able to finish my sentence! Its very interesting to see the complete different he approach doing the work from my last companion.
Elder Riberio we would plan out our day very specifically from hour to hour with back of plans for each hour. Planning with elder Leal is much more spontaneous with more of ideas that we might do though out the day when we don't have a set in stone appointment... Both ways of planning our very different from the other and i have had very good and bad days with both.

Something pretty cool that happend my first real day with my companion . I started personal study with the worst head ache i am sure that i have ever had. I couldnt think and the only thing i wanted to do was lay in bed and sleep until it was gone!! But i also didnt want to my companion to think i was lazy or a baby so i just stayed at my desk and did my best to try and study. I Took a proper amount of medicine and just continued to pray that would be able to work the day. When it was time for Companionship study it was pretty obvious my ability to function properly was impelled. Speaking and understanding Portuguese is something i have to try very much still. Elder Leal asked me if i wanted a blessing. of course i accepted. After we back to studying. It was kind of funny because while reading together I fell asleep at my desk as he was reading. He woke me up and i read my next paragraph he decided to read me alone after that becuase he said he had no idea what lang i was speaking. I fell asleep again immediately after wards again.  After about 10 min of sleeping i woke up and felt perfectly fine. My companion let me know what happened. I was able to work just fine through out the day! I had a slight headache but it nothing that stopped us from working! But because I did have a little bit of a head ache my Portuguese was as not very good. I was speaking with a really heavy accent. I was little pretty upset. Then my companion let me know the blessing that i received, which i didnt understand because of my headache, said that i would portuguese would be the same as a brazalian. This is so awesome!!
I am so very grateful for the power of the lord! I am so very grateful that we have it on the earth today and it can be a blessing in our lives. We have the only true church on earth. We have only the ONLY way to return and live with God again. Continue forward. Treasure the words of the profetas and the BoM for they will lead to to eternal life!

Realengo is a neighborhood in the West Zone of Rio de JaneiroBrazil. The lower and middle-class neighborhood is between the Mendanha and Pedra Branca mountains.[1] It is located between the mountains of Pedra Branca (White Rock) and Mendanha in the northern of the called West Zone of the city, owned and names the XXXIII Administrative Region which encompasses the entire east around the neighborhood. Realengo usually has the highest temperatures in the city, even though the winter nights are often cold because of the proximity to the mountains. Created on November 20, 1815, every year on this day the city's birthday is celebrated with the Week of Realengo. According to popular tradition, its name would have been short for the Real Engenho (Royal Mill) which was Real Eng°, posted on the board on top of the tramway and, over time, became popularly Realengo. However, another source comes from the phrase "Terras Realengas" (Land Realengas) because they were far from the court, as they were called the land of the region. Pedro I of Brazil used to go to the farm ofSanta Cruz (Saint Cross) by the Estrada Real de Santa Cruz (Royal Road to Santa Cruz), passing by the Real Engenho, where he often stayed.

Joshua & Anna are cycling machines

The cycling took place last summer, so this is a makeup post. Joshua and Anna participated in the Boys & Girls clubs bike club. They worked hard and rode hard. They logged hundreds of miles on their bikes this summer and this isn't the first year for Joshua. He's been riding for several years now. Bike ridding is such a great sport. I hope they can make this a lifetime pursuit. I'm proud of you, Joshua and Anna!! Kudos to the Areblos and Pixtons as well. Hope you all ride again this summer.

John & Anna Anderson with friends after the Saturday session of Stake Conference

We had a great time at the our Stake Conference Saturday night session. Afterwards we stopped at Sweet Frogs for some frozen yogurt. This is were this picture was taken; so very good to go to church with family and friends. Not only is Anna and John together, but they are with some of the best people a parent could ever ask to be friends with the kids. The Chandlers and Wintertons are the best, and not only are they the best but they are the best of friends.
This Stake Conference session's theme was "hastening the work," and the significant change going on in the world with missionary work and the change in ages for missionaries. This message strikes close to the heart. We have Jacob serving in Brazil and Joe in Argentina with Joshua soon to submit his paperwork and receive his call. You could say that with three missionaries we are neck deep in this historical moment. President Carter said something to the effect that we should remember the day because it would be marked as one of the great historical moments in the progression of the Lord's work.
By the way, do you notice how handsome John is in his purple time and Anna has beautiful smile?

Elder Jacob Anderson's Latest Letter from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

So every transfer i have decided that I will work on a different Christ like Attribute. I would like to tell you a little bit about my experience.. The first transfer I worked on patience. When I originally realized I need more patience these where my thoughts. "I guess i will have a really annoying companion and I will need patience's with him..."  After just a few days I realized that this was not the case of all. I need more patience firstly with God and then my self... My second transfer I decided to work on being
100 percent obedient. Which is a bit difficult. The church has made a manual of rules, My mission president has his own even more strict set of rules, Zone Leaders have "Rules," District Leaders have "Rules,"
and every mission i have talked to has a different understanding of rules. I will not choice which rules i follow but i will follow them all which exactness. Now let me tell you about my experience this morning. Before we hear about new transfers we have personal study before hand. During this time I spend time studying the attributes of Christ. In preach my Gospel it even has a test you can take that helps you evaluate your self and how your doing with each Christ like attribute. I always score the worst in humility... But this morning as i was studying I came to the conclusion I needed to work on Love and Charity. It just seemed like the thing i need to work. I thought this will deff be a good thing a work on. I am always telling my companion "you need to love the people we talk to! Everything they say is interesting." I guess I too better love the people here more. After personal study we have companion ship study. After companion ship study we receive a phone call letting us know when,if, and where we will be transferred. I received the information I will being staying in my beloved area but will being receiving a new companion , Elder Leil (he is brazalian). My DL shares the house with us and immediately after wards he was very disappointed about having this Elder in his district. He was his ZL before this.. This was not the most exciting news. I have to spend the next 6 weeks with this Elder. Then the Zone leaders called becuase they wanted to hear about who is staying and who is leaving. The first zone leader after hearing about my companion started giving me advice telling me how I would need to be the next transfer and in the middle of his sentance his companion (the other
ZL) took the phone and just said "your going need to love your next companion."
Well the lord sure is blessing me with a lot of oppurtuntys to progress and becoming better!

Elder Joseph Anderson's Latest Letter from Corrientes, Argentina--yes, he was transferred

Alrighty so on wednesday we had transfers and I got moved...to the biggest city in our mission. Yeah kinda a big change. The city I am in right now is called Corrientes and the area I am in has had about 5 baptisms in 6 or 7 years. Our area is right in the heart of college town and has a ton of students and apartments for students. At night we go to sleep to blasting music and people practicing  guitars and singing. haha  Its just sooo crazy how different everything is here just three hours from where I was. And I got a new companion named Elder Bingham from Brigham City Utah straight out of highschool. He is pretty freaking awesome. Super Excited, alsways in a good mood and really funny. This is probably one of the hardest areas in the entire mission but I feel that Elder Bingham and I are going to have success. We have tracted a lot and every single person here is catholic and won`t even let us talk to them for 2 minutes. Very challenging. I have already gotten frustrated a few times but I know that there are prepared people out there waiting for us. Our branch is really small, we have about 20 active members every week but I still feel the same confort and peace in church that I have always felt on my mission. basically all that has happened since I got transfered on wednesday is we have been lost...a lot. AND...on sunday we had a BAPTISM!!! haha yeah his name is Cristian and he is an 18 year old student who I didnt meet until the morning of the baptism on sunday because he coulnt do it on saturday. My companion and the Elder who was here before me had been teaching him for a while and he is a really great guy. It was so exciting to see how happy he was after his baptism and after church he met with the Branch President and they told us he is going to prepare to go on a mission in a year.

Different city, different culture, different weather, different economy, different companion....but really its all still the same. Same teachings, same happiness, same joy, same feelings of love from our Father in Heaven, same purpose and outcome in the work of the Lord. I am so happy to be a representative of Jesus Christ and I know that there are hard days but the Lord is always there to pick us up and brush us off. He has done it for me a ton of times in just 5 days. My companion and I are going to be obedient, work our tales off, and listen to the inspiracion from the Lord and by doing all that we can to be better servants of the Lord every day. And if we do that, we don`t have to worry and be stressed about how many lessions we get in a day or what the outcome is everyweek we can have confidence that the Lord will take care of the rest. Well that`s all I got for this week. I hope you all have a wonderful week!!!!!! Nos Vemos chow chow

Elder Joseph Anderson's latest letter

Well this week was probably one of the worst weeks I have had as far as numbers go. We had to be in early two of the days because of carnival which wasn't that crazy here. And we went on divisions with the zone leaders. I love my zone leader Elder Reynolds. He is a super smart guy who studied computers at BYU for a semester before he came out on his mission and he knows EVERYTHING. I´m serious like everything. So talking with him is never boring haha.
This week overall has been a lot of contacting, lessons with inactive members, and many rejections but something really cool happened also. So my companion was sick for a good part of this week which caused us to not work one morning and come back to the apartment early another day. So while he was sleeping and resting I did a lot of reading and praying. On Friday night we came back to the apartment early and my companion changed and went right to sleep because he wasn't feeling well so I had to plan for the next day by myself and after realizing that we really had nothing planned for the next day I was very discouraged and a little stressed. I did what I could to plan and then read a little and got ready for bed. While I was saying my prayer before I went to bed I asked Heavenly Father to help me know where we should go tomorrow and who we should go visit. After I asked for this help I took a moment to pause. A name of an inactive member popped up in my head. But this was an inactive member we had made contact with once and made an appointment to meet and talk to her but she wasn't there. We also tried multiple times to go back and visit her but we could never find her. And this was about 2 or three months ago. But her name just stuck in my head. So on Saturday we went out in the morning to work and we went to a family who had kind of/half way committed to be there at that time and they weren't. Immediately the member´s name came to my head and without hesitation we started heading towards her house. My companion asked me where we were going and I told him I felt we should go and talk to this member. So we started coming up to the house and she was sitting outside with some of her friends....Side story, while we were walking up to the house I got the closest to being bit by a dog I have ever been. Her neighbors dog came running up at me full speed and jumped at my arm but luckily I still can somewhat to a spin move so the dog just barely missed me. Then the neighbor came in really fast with a huge rod and protected me apologizing to me because I guess the dog had escaped and wasn't supposed to be outside because it attacked people!!!! Yikes!!! Really an angel probably moved me because of how fat and out of shape I am but I really have turned into an uncle Reeko and I like to think I was just too fast and quick for that dog...Anyway we sat down and had a lesson with the inactive member and it ended up being one of the most spiritual lessons on my mission. I told her I felt inspired to pass by her house this morning and that the Lord wanted us visit her that day. She told us she knew that was true and she had been really struggling lately but us showing up unplanned that morning to talk to her was a sign from her Heavenly Father that he has not forgotten her. What an amazing experience it was.
I know that we have a Heavenly Father who loves and cares about us more than humanly possible for us to imagine. So much that he sent his only begotten son to suffer and die for us. I know that the Lord hears and answers our prayers and that he is always there to comfort us. I love you all very much and I am grateful for all your help and prayers.

Planting asparagus

I hope to grow some asparagus as soon as I get settled in Greenville, NC. Our family loves asparagus during our family meals.
I was disappointed to find out that the only places asparagus doesn't grow well in the lower 48 states is Florida and the gulf coast. Greenville, NC is probably considered the gulf coast; but anyway, I still plan to try to grow it. Below is a great article I've copied from www.organicgardening.com

We enjoyed--not--daylight savings time this weekend. Alisha shows in pictures what she thinks of it:

Jacob's 3/10/14 letter from Rio De Janerio, Brazil

I haven't talked about the food at all. So let me tell you about every single I have had since I arrived. For breakfast I eat eggs with some bread with a shake - that contains a banana ice and powdered milk- lately I have just been eating the shake for breakfast. The members give us lunch except on p-day. So for lunch on p-day I make a hamburger with some fruit or a shake. The members 5/6 (everyday but Sunday) pay for our lunch. There is a member that owns a restaurant so we eat there almost every single day except Sunday and Monday. We only have a few members who prepare food and eat with us, it’s just so much easier for them to give us 20 hies (10 dollars). When we eat the restaurant we get one plate and then we are on our way. Its fast and we never eat too much.
But when we eat with members it’s like a competition, who can make more food or who can eat more food. There are a few families in the ward that believe that the more food we eat the more blessings they receive.
We are always given the same thing to eat. Rice, beans, salad (usually
potato) with some type of meat. I have only had to eat fish once. I have eaten chicken and cow heart also some part of the cow that the member was not too sure about. ITs all really good if you add enough beans so I am always happy. If you want to have fun with the missionary's invite them over and try to make more food than they could ever possibly eat. Then tell them that they need to eat all the food because you will receive more blessings if they do. I am always really surprised at how much food me and my companion can eat whenever we are told this.
So I always struggle with what to write about because soo much happens in the week.. spiritually, emotionally and physically. So I try to do my best to talk a little bit about everything. So something I am having a really tough time learning is how to deal with being imperfect. If you believe in the Gospel of Jesus Christ I think that we all can agree that our goal is to move towards perfection. So how do you handle it when you are not being perfect and you just cannot seem to get something right? I deal with this problem everyday and I've found myself every night writing about how I could have been better, what I should have done, what things I need to change... One of the last things I wrote was "will I ever have a time in my life when I look at where I am at think I have done all that I can, and ever thing is all good." In other words have I done things perfectly. The answer is No. I don’t not think I will be ever to look back and think I did things perfectly or doing them perfectly now. This is kind of sad and depressing though... I realized I need to change the way I look at the day and instead of only look at things I could have done better I need to remember first all the good I have done. I now start off by asking did I follow all of the commandments, which includes studying the words of the lord and prayer,  did I follow the rules of the mission with exactness, Did i do any good in the day, then i end with what could i have done better. As i have started to do this i have realized the accomplishments i have had in each day and how happy the lord must be with my effort. Though it is still very difficult to accept my imperfections i know that though the atonement of Jesus Christ I can, and i will change. I think by far the most important thing to remember is Mosiah 4:27.. "And see that all these things are done in wisdom and order; for it is not requisite that a man should run faster than he has strength. And again, it is expedient that he should be diligent, that thereby he might win the prize; therefore, all things must be done in order. " God doesn't not expect us to more than we can be.
But he has given us many talents and ability and he wants us to improve every single day. If you not reading (studying) the scriptures daily, start. The scriptures particular the BoM are so very important.
If you didn't study yesterday you will never be able to go back and change that you missed out on a huge opportunity you can only change and receive forgiveness by reading today.

TheBrandywine tomato plant is an heirloom cultivar of the species, with large potato-leaved foliage and which bears large pink beefsteak-shaped fruit, popularly considered among the best tasting available.

Description[edit]

Brandywine tomatoes can bear fruit up to 1.5 lbs (0.7 kg), requiring 80 to 100 days to reach maturity, making it among the slowest maturing varieties of common tomato cultivars. Brandywine has been described as having a "great tomatoey flavor",[1] (others have called it a beautifully sweet tomato that is offset by a wonderful acidity), leading to heavy usage despite the original cultivar's relatively low yield per plant. Its fruit has the beefsteak shape and pinkish flesh, as opposed to the deep red of more common store bought varieties. Even when fully ripe, the tomato can have green shoulders near the stem.
The Brandywine tomato plant also has potato leaves, an unusual variation on the tomato plant whose leaves are smooth and oval with a pointy tip, instead of jagged and fjord-like the way "normal" tomato plant leaves are.

History[edit]

Brandywine tomato ad from The Ohio Farmer, January 12, 1889
As noted by Craig LeHoullier, the origins of the Brandywine cultivar remain unclear. [2] Burpee reports carrying it in their catalogue as early as 1886, and there are references to it older than that.[1]Though it is often said to be of Amish origins, there is no evidence of this.[citation needed]
LeHoullier also notes, it had been included in the Seed Savers Exchange in 1982 by an elderly Ohio gardener named Ben Quisenberry. He received the variety from a woman named Dorris Sudduth Hill who could trace Brandywine in her family for over 80 years. Brandywine has become one of the most popular home garden cultivars in the United States. Due to the proliferation of many misidentified varieties, the pink-fruited, potato-leaved Brandywine is sometimes labeledBrandywine (Sudduth's).[2]

Nepeta cataria, commonly known as catnipcatswort, or catmint, is aspecies of the genus Nepeta in the Lamiaceae familynative to Europeand southwestern to central Asia, and is widely naturalized elsewhere.[1]The common name catmint can also refer to the genus as a whole.

Description[edit]

Nepeta cataria is a short lived herbaceous perennial, growing 50–100 centimetres (20–39 in) tall and wide. It resembles a typical mint family member in appearance by having the characteristic square[2] stem that members of the Lamiaceae plant family have, but with brown-green foliage. The coarse-toothed leaves are triangular to ovate.[3]
The small bilabiate flowers can be white and finely spotted with pale purple or pink. They are showy and fragrant. The plant blooms from late spring through autumn.[3]

Uses[edit]

The plant terpenoid nepetalactone is the main chemical constituent of the essential oil of Nepeta cataria. Nepetalactone can be extracted from catnip by steam distillation.[4]

Cultivation[edit]

Nepeta cataria is cultivated as an ornamental plant for use in gardens. It is also grown for its attractant qualities tohouse cats and butterflies.[3]
The plant is drought tolerant and deer resistant. It can be a repellant for certain insects, including aphids and squash bugs.[3]
Varieties
  • Nepeta cataria var. citriodora (or N. cataria subsp. citriodora), Lemon catnip.

Attractant[edit]

The compound "iridodial" as extracted from catnip oil has been found to attract the beneficial insect known as lacewings which eat aphids and mites.[5]

Repellent[edit]

Nepetalactone is a mosquito and fly repellent.[6][7] Oil isolated from catnip by steam distillation is a repellent against insects, in particular mosquitoes, cockroaches and termites.[8][9] Research suggests that, in vitro, distilled nepetalactone repels mosquitoes ten times more effectively than DEET, the active ingredient in most insect repellents,[6][10] but that it is not as effective a repellent when used on the skin.[11]

Humans[edit]

Nepeta cataria is commonly used in herbal tea blends related to sleep, stress reduction, and relaxation.[12] Also used as a culinary herb for many dishes.

Medicinal[edit]

Catnip has a history of medicinal use for a variety of ailments.[13] The plant has been consumed as a tea, juice, tincture, infusion or poultice, and has also been smoked.[13] However, its medicinal use has fallen out of favor with the development of more commonplace pharmaceutical drugs.[13]

Cats[edit]

Catnip contains the feline attractantnepetalactoneNepeta cataria (and some other species within the genus Nepeta) are known for their behavioral effects on the catfamily, not only on domestic cats but also other species of cats.[13] One test showed that tigersleopards, and lynxes all reacted strongly to catnip in a manner similar to domestic cats, while lions did not react at all.[14][15]
With domestic cats, N. cataria is used as a recreational substance for pet cats' enjoyment, and catnip and catnip-laced products designed for use with domesticated cats are available to consumers. The common behaviors when cats sense the bruised leaves or stems of catnip are rubbing on the plant, rolling on the ground, pawing at it, licking it, and chewing it. Consuming much of the plant is followed by drooling, sleepiness, anxiety, leaping about and purring. Some growl, meow, scratch, or bite the hand holding it. The main response period after exposure is generally between five and fifteen minutes,[16]:p.107 after which olfactory fatigue usually sets in.
The nepetalactone in catnip acts as a feline attractant after it enters the feline's nose.[17] Cats detect it through theirolfactory epithelium, not through their vomeronasal organ.[18] At the olfactory epithelium, the nepetalactone binds to one or more olfactory receptors.
Not all cats are affected by catnip.[13] Roughly half to two thirds of cats are affected by the plant.[19][20] The phenomenon is hereditary.[13]
Other plants that also have this effect on cats include valerian (Valeriana officinalis), Acalypha indica (root) and plants that contain actinidine.[21] Approximately 30% of domestic house cats who do not react to catnip will react in a similar way to Tatarian honeysuckle sawdust.[16]:p.108
